Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or pick-up from your hotel, you will meet your driver-guide for a short briefing about your safari. You will begin with a Kigali city tour, which may include a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, and cultural centers that provide insight into Rwanda’s history and heritage. After the city tour, enjoy lunch in Kigali. In the afternoon, depart for Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda. The drive takes approximately 2–2.5 hours through scenic rolling hills, terraced farmland, and rural landscapes that define Rwanda’s countryside. Arrive in Musanze (Ruhengeri) in the evening and check in at your lodge near the park. Relax, have dinner, and prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking experience.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Cultural Experience

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing by park rangers. You will be assigned a gorilla family and guided on trekking rules and safety guidelines. By around 8:30 AM, begin your trek into the forest accompanied by experienced ranger guides. The trek can take between 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. The terrain varies from gentle slopes to more challenging forest trails. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend a maximum of one hour observing them. This is a rare opportunity to watch their behavior up close, including feeding, grooming, and social interactions led by the dominant silverback. After the trek, return to the park headquarters and meet your driver-guide for transfer back to your lodge for lunch and relaxation.

In the afternoon or evening, choose an optional activity:

  • Visit the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo for scenic views and photography
  • Community walk to interact with local people and learn about Rwandan traditions

Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Return to Kigali – Departure

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the return drive to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may stop at local craft markets or souvenir shops for last-minute shopping. You will then be dropped off at Kigali International Airport or your hotel, marking the end of your 3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari.
