Birdlife: A True Birder’s Paradise
Semuliki National Park is one of Africa’s premier birding destinations, with over 440 recorded bird species. Its lowland rainforest ecosystem supports many Guinea-Congo biome species, making it one of the few places in East Africa where these rare birds can be seen.
The park is particularly important for birders seeking special and hard-to-find species that are rarely recorded elsewhere in Uganda.
Notable bird species include:
Shoebill stork – a rare and iconic bird found in swampy areas
Nkulengu rail – elusive and often heard rather than seen
Congo serpent eagle – a sought-after forest raptor
White-billed kingfisher – commonly seen near rivers and wetlands
Great blue turaco – a striking forest bird with vibrant colors
Hornbills and sunbirds – widely distributed across the park
Birdwatching is most rewarding along Kirumia Trail, which cuts through the heart of the forest to the Semuliki River, and around Sempaya, where the forest canopy and clearings provide excellent viewing opportunities.
With its unique species, dense habitats, and rich diversity, Semuliki offers an unforgettable experience for both serious birders and casual nature lovers.
